I am going to sign up for the lsat to take it on June 6th. I have been thinking of taking it for nearly a year, yet have only begun to study off and on during the last couple of months.
I see great opportunity of my having a legal degree, yet the costs are high and rising, while the rewards of a stressful 3 years plus a huge exam are not that thrilling. I am interested in the learning process, the lsat actually is fun, albeit fun for a pcv, and the legal cases in journalism are interesting. The legal notes are not that fun, yet this is another story. Basically, law schools have the most students in history, who have the highest scores, pay the highest costs and often are left without real employment following graduation.
The essential to my going to law school is becoming a lawyer. Without a desire to practice, law school is stupid. Still, I figure that I can work on small cases, or use my studies to work with the UN or Foreign Service later on in my life. My PCV experience does not give me preferential treatment in becoming a FSO, merely other government jobs.
Naturally, I will take the exam and apply. The only question is that the cost of time wasted in something that I may not like and may not enjoy spending time money and effort weighs against the benefit of changing the world or really impacting society. Instead of becoming a social scientist professor, who complains about things writing and talking to convince people, I could use the law and my logical mind to convince others through persuasion or through legal obligations. This added ability of obligation is what attracts me to a professional degree, which is well respected, hated, and sometimes considered costly.
Now in your comments, I would request any experience in Law School, Berkley or others. Also please drop some comments on your opinion and thoughts. Is it worth the cost? Will I be too old or just older? Should I just jump into the business world or start my own business?
Either way, let's discuss the benefits and costs of 3 years of an ABA law school with a goal of leaving without any debt, an essential for me, and much the wiser & more capable of being the change I want to see in the world.
